Last day to deposit October doctoral dissertations
Last day to elect credit/no credit option for first half session course
or to change from credit/no credit option to a regular grade.
Last day to drop a first half-session course without a “W” recorded
on your academic record.

Taking Charge: Building a Productive Relationship with Your Advisor
Wednesday, September 30, 3:00-5:00 PM, Illini Union Room 407
Exploring some of the problems that occur in mentoring relationships
and what graduate students can do to help resolve them. The workshop
will include small group activities designed to engage participants in
evaluating the responsibilities of both graduate students and faculty in
developing a positive working relationship. Co-sponsored by the
Graduate College and the Counseling Center.

New Thesis Office Walk-in Hours begin October 5
New hours will be 1:00 to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
and Fridays. There will be no walk-in hours on Mondays and
Wednesdays. During walk-in hours, students can meet with Thesis
Office staff on a first come, first served basis to ask questions about
the thesis deposit process and submit a hard copy thesis for review
and deposit.

Thesis Deposit Workshop for December 2009
Wednesday, October 7, 4:30 - 6:00 PM, 100 Noyes Lab
Do you plan to complete a thesis or dissertation for December 2009
graduation? Are you curious about the advantages of the new
electronic thesis and dissertation deposit option available to graduate
students beginning October 5? Join Mark Zulauf, Coordinator of the
Graduate College Thesis Office, for a tour of the new thesis submission
and review process. To help students achieve a successful, low-stress
deposit, we’ll also take a look at the deadlines, supplementary materials
required for deposit, and newly revised thesis requirements in effect
for the December 2009 deposit period.

Public Engagement Project Grants
Request for Proposals Submission Deadline: Monday, November 2
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Engagement is seeking
proposals from faculty, students, and staff to fund community-related
projects, scholarly work, creative endeavors, course development and
other activities within the broad framework of public engagement.
Grants up to $20,000 will be made available on a competitive basis.
Grant decisions will be announced no later than December 15, 2009.
Projects must be completed and a final report submitted by
December 15, 2010.

Wednesday, September 30, 6:00 PM, 31 Psychology Building
Visiting guest speaker and Illinois alum, Jimmy de la Torre returns
to campus to give this professional development workshop for
graduate students. In 2003, he earned his Ph.D. in Psychology
from Illinois. He is now Associate Professor in the Graduate School
of Education at Rutgers University and is the 2009 recipient of the
Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Illinois Association of Graduate Schools (IAGS) Fall Conference
October 25-26, I Hotel and Conference Center
Faculty and graduate students are welcome to attend the Illinois
Association of Graduate Schools annual fall conference hosted
by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This year’s topic
is “Graduate Education and the Illinois Economy” and the meeting
will include an address by George Walker, Senior Vice President for
Research Development and Graduate Education as well as Dean of
the University Graduate School at Florida International University
in Miami, along with presentations by economists and leaders
from Illinois corporations.

Dental/Vision Insurance Enrollment Change Period Deadline
Wednesday, September 30
Students without waiver-generating appointments who are
currently covered by the graduate student health insurance plan
may voluntarily enroll in dental and/or vision insurance plans by
paying the annual premiums. (Students with waiver-generating
appointments will be automatically enrolled.) Graduate students
covered by the student health insurance plan may also purchase
coverage for dependents. Students wishing to purchase coverage
for themselves or dependents must do so during the enrollment
period, which ends September 30.
