Thesis & Dissertation
Many graduate students are in programs that require the completion of a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation to earn a degree. Both master's theses and doctoral dissertations are deposited in the Graduate College Thesis Office.
The Thesis Office provides resources and information to assist you with the thesis process, including Thesis requirements, Defense and deposit deadlines, Deposit workshop presentation, Thesis FAQs, and Forms.
Note: "Thesis" refers to both a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation.
The Thesis Process
The thesis process can generally be divided into three important steps:
- Step 1: Development (Graduate College thesis requirements, writing resources, copyright information)
- Step 2: Departmental Approval (Filing the title page, preparing the Certificate of Committee Approval)
- Step 3: Deposit (Submitting the thesis to the Graduate College, additional materials required for the deposit)
Electronic Thesis Deposit Option is Here!
As of October 5, 2009, the Graduate College offers master's and doctoral students the option to submit an electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) for review by and deposit with the Thesis Office. Students who have formatted their theses according to Graduate College thesis requirements and have obtained departmental approval for the thesis may submit an ETD now.
A brief informational video about the ETD process is now available from the University Library in two formats:
- Flash version (with captions, may be turned off by clicking "CC" on the menu bar after video starts)
- QuickTime version (with captions)
